Cost Jobs
If you are already a retired person or coming to that stage in life, you have that feeling that it is still not time to discontinue working yet see little choices. You may have heard the controversy surrounding the issue that retired people cost jobs for those who need them more, like those with families to support. The good news is that most of the jobs going to retirees are ones younger adults on the career fast track wouldn't want in the first place. This doesn't mean the jobs are undesirable, they just aren't what someone trying to build a career would necessarily want for themselves.
Jobs in retail are extremely popular with retired individuals. You will find quite a few retired people along with quite a few teenagers working at these stores. From the upscale department store to the discount department store there are not only good part-time jobs but also a pleasant working environment with plenty of socialization. Banks are also good places for retirees to work, especially if they have prior financial experience. At a bank teller job you may be able to alternate between sitting and standing which may be more comfortable than doing either for long periods of time.
Pharmacies need delivery drivers, but often can't pay top wages for them. In the same vein, hospitals require shuttle drivers to transport patients where they need to go. Senior citizens with valid driving permits make perfect candidates because the work is usually early in the day and part time in nature. Part time employment is ideal for retirees because it gives them plenty of time to explore hobbies, travel and spend time with loved ones.
So for the person wondering if retirees cost jobs, the majority answer would be no. The high profile corporate jobs are usually reserved for ambitious individuals climbing the ladder to success. In many cases retired individuals have already reached their career pinnacle and simply want a method of earning extra cash while getting out and about. If you are retired or preparing to retire, consider contacting your local employment commission or even the AARP regarding senior citizens and their impact on the workforce. These resources can also help you find the right employment for your strengths and skills.
